Employment Law Updates | 2016


Every year we are faced with a raft of new Employment Legislation that can be hard to keep on top of. As an employer, you have a legal obligation to make sure you are fully up to date with all the latest changes and ensure that they are reflected in your contracts, handbooks and general working practices. We've pulled together some of the key employment law reforms that could affect your business in 2016.


  • January 2016 - Government’s fit for work scheme will be rolled out across the whole country.
  • January 2016 - New legislation to give workers the right to ban exclusivity clauses in zero hour contracts

  • March 2016 - New rules for obtaining regulatory references for the financial sector 

  • April 2016 - Statutory maternity pay, statutory paternity pay, statutory shared parental pay and statutory adoption pay to be frozen at 2015/16 rate of £139.58 per week. Statutory sick pay will also be frozen at £88.45 per week.

  • April 2016 - Employers NIC’s abolished for apprentices under 25 

  • April 2016 - Compulsory "Living Wage" introduced for workers over 25

  • April 2016 - Increased penalties for those found not to be paying at least National Minimum Wage. 

  • Expected 2016 - Changes to the tax free element of termination payments

  • Expected 2016 - Introduction of mandatory Gender Pay Gap Reporting regulations 

  • Expected 2016 - Implementation of the Trade Union Bill which reforms the rules on trade union ballots for taking industrial action.
