Health & Safety at Work 2016 Statistics

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has released its latest summary statistics for Health & Safety at Work for Great Britain in 2015/16. Covering ill health and workplace injury, the results show that despite being one of the safest countries in the world in which to work, we still have a lot to do to improve the safety of our working environments. Here are a few of the key “at a glance” findings from its research:

  • 1.3 million people suffering from work-related illness

  • 144 fatalities at work

  • 72,702 non-fatal employee injuries reported under RIDDOR

  • 600,000 self-reported workplace injuries

  • 25.9 million days were lost due to work-related ill health and 4.5 million due to workplace injury

  • £14.1 billion was the cost of injuries and new cases of ill health

  • 660 cases prosecuted that resulted in a conviction

  • £38.3 million in fines resulting from prosecutions

Over the coming months, we will be looking at some of the findings in a little more depth, comparing industries side by side and seeing how we fare against our (for now) EU counterparts.

Good health & safety management by employers and relevant technical training for employees can help minimise the risk of injury and workplace illness. Speak to one of our qualified consultants to find out what steps you need to take to provide a safe working environment.
