Looking after your staff during troubled times

We hope none of you have been adversely affected by the recent riots but are now mindful of the duty of care we have to ensure the safety of our employees. With this in mind, we would like to share the following checklist with you:

  • Communicate company policy on attendance, working practises and precautions at this time.
  • Inform senior staff members (and the police) of key holders.
  • Evacuation plan: exits and rendezvous points.
  • Employees empowered to risk assess travel and work plans.
  • Dealing with injuries.
  • How and when to alert emergency services.
  • Assisting customers and visitors.
  • Clear external equipment, flammable liquids and rubble and debris.
  • If in doubt always call the police – 999 in emergencies 101 for non-emergencies and you can call anonymously on Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
  • CCTV cameras in prominent protected positions as a deterrent.

If your property has been invaded check:

  • Is it safe for your staff to return?
  • Are the premises and buildings secure and sound?
  • Have toxic substances leaked or been spilled?
  • Chemical, biological or nuclear or radio active issues.
  • Electrics switched off and sound e.g. exposed live wire.
  • Are there slip, trip or fall hazards as a result of the break-in?
  • Has damage been caused to previously stable asbestos?
  • Has there been food or drinking water contamination?
  • Has protective clothing been damaged?
  • Is machinery in good working order and guards back in place?
  • Do you require the emergency services or others to give the ‘all clear’?
