Tim Price, Owner/ Director of Park City Consulting Ltd, Chairman of the Essex IoD, and Vice Chairman of the Essex Employment and Skills Board was recently invited by the Mayor, Councilor Colin Sykes to give a speech to 40 businesses in Colchester.
Here is a snippet of what Tim had to say;
“On to business issues, who’s heard of the south East LEP? LEP is our Local Enterprise Partnership. Our LEP includes, Essex, Southend, Thurrock, Medway, Kent and East Sussex.
Now we know what and who the LEP is, who can tell me what they have been working on in the last year?
As business leaders we should know in detail, as all our businesses, and local government agencies are impacted by their work.
Their Strategic plan, will fundamentally impact our business future, where and when will the money from central government and or European funds be spent, assuming the plan attracts support from Government and we are awarded funds to meet our needs!
The LEP plan submitted to government follows a common theme, public agencies and private sectors working together to address local priorities for delivering high growth strategies and sustained employment. The Government told the LEP’s that any Plans that offer growth potential and are aspirational and differentiated in some way, will get preferential consideration.
Aim as high as you can, was the message, don't submit a plan that maintains the status quo, challenge convention and identify the enablers to growth, if they are not present, create them!
The important element of the plan however is partnership and challenging convention, its business and local government pooling their best joint talent for the benefit of all stakeholders that will provide solutions that underpin real economic growth.
It’s about avoiding short term popular projects that win votes in the short term but lose their momentum as a new policy, or a new portfolio holder changes direction. This applies equally to local and National Government.
In Essex, our Growth plan identifies high growth sectors, some of which are consistent with the LEP's strategic growth plan…”
