Having announced last year the intention to extend mandatory gender pay gap reporting to public sector bodies, this month the Government has launched its consultation paper which sets out the current context for public sector organisations and what changes are intended. It is anticipated that gender pay gap reporting in the public sector will be much the same as the model already developed for private sector companies and voluntary organisations and will similarly at this stage only affect those organisations with 250 or more employees.
In her forward to the consultation document, The Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities, Justine Greening MP says the reporting regime will be introduced in 2016-17 and affect around 3.8million employees in terms of seeing greater transparency of gender-related pay differences. The gender pay gap for the public sector currently stands at 18.5% compared with 25.3% in the public sector.
