Tackle Ill Health In The Workplace With A Health And Wellbeing Plan

A director behind a camera

Mental health issues are a growing concern in the workplace. The latest statistics from the HSE show that more people in the UK are experiencing work-related stress, depression or anxiety more than ever before.

According to the HSE’s Labour Force Survey, 595,000 cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety were recorded in 2017/2018 - a 13% increase on the previous year. And it’s not a one-off, with the previous year seeing a rise of 7%. You can read the full news item in Health & Safety at Work Mental ill health caused or aggravated by work accounted for 15.4 million working days lost in 2017/2018. This figure represents 57% of the total number of lost working days, a serious concern for any business.

So, what can be done to increase the health and wellbeing of your workforce?

Take responsibility

Taking responsibility for your employees health and wellbeing within the workplace is the way forward. By protecting your staff you are protecting your key assets, and your business.

The January job-seeking rush

Getting a wellbeing plan in place before December arrives, makes perfect sense, especially when you know that 30% of employees start looking for a new job in the New Year. It may sound surprisingly that nearly a third of your workforce will be thinking about a job change, but with time away from work, employees are able to reflect on their current career frustrations and future prospects.

Retain your talent

With the festive season fast approaching, it’s an ideal time to focus on retaining your current employees and reassessing their health and wellbeing. What can you do to make their working lives less stressful, more enjoyable and more productive?

Personal wellbeing plans

Being valued is an important part of everyone’s working and personal lives, and by taking a responsibility for your employees wellbeing and mental health you are showing your commitment to them. Personal wellbeing plans can help employers gain a measure of their employees current levels of work-related stress, depression and anxiety. In turn, it’s an opportunity for your employees to be open about how they feel, giving them an opportunity to consider what would help them and ultimately enable you to provide the right support.
