What is Plan B?

Plan B forms part of a backup plan for controlling Coronavirus during the Autumn/Winter periods.

It contains some extra adjustments/restrictions from the previous position. These adjustments include:

a. Communicating clearly and urgently to the public that the level of risk has increased, and with it the need to behave more cautiously.

b. Introducing mandatory vaccine-only COVID-status certification in certain settings.

c. Legally mandating face coverings in certain settings.

It also contains the request for staff to work from home again for a limited period this comes with greater costs to business and the economy and is only used as the final decision.

What does Plan B mean for your business?

The guidelines for face-covering in indoor settings (aimed at public-facing and retail businesses) were tightened last week on 30th November and a full list can be found here. This will be extended further on Friday 10th December for most public places.

Masks will still not be needed in hospitality settings such as pubs or restaurants, nor in venues where it is "not practical to wear them" (for instance, where exercise or singing takes place).

It will also see the introduction in certain venues and events of a COVID passport restrictions from Wednesday 15th December.

A number of these restrictions will revolve around testing and vaccination arrangements and policies. This includes indoor venues with >500 and unseated outdoor venues >4000 and any venue >10000 people.

The cases of the omicron variant are rapidly on the increase and it is important to continue to review your COVID measures and arrangements taking the opportunity to update your risk assessment. Call us if you need help.

From Monday 13th December staff are expected to work from home if they can. If your staff have previously worked from home in the pandemic setting you are expected to repeat this.

It is also time to consider any further impacts that the omicron variant may have. Whilst staff with full vaccination are exempt from self-isolation requirements this does not apply to the omicron variant which can cause close contacts to be required to test daily.

Consideration to reinstating some relaxed measures such as work bubbles can reduce the impact on the business, don’t forget Visitor and contractor controls.

These changes are effective from Monday13th December
